What all this for then?

Yesterday was a pretty important day for me. Yesterday I received what I needed to move on with my life. I don’t want to go into much detail at this time, suffice to say that for the last 6 months or so I have been dealing with a health condition. I can’t tell you the name because it doesn’t have a name. I don’t want to talk about it right now because as of yesterday, I consider a part of my past and I am focusing on my future. I will invariably go into more detail about it at a later date, but this post is all about setting the new stage.

I have before me an empty slate, and it is my intension to do a better job of it than I have in my past. It is my hope that this site, blog, journal, whatever you want to call it will help me in this area. It will be a way for me to discuss with all of you what I learn in my journeys. <crickets> I have a bunch of ideas about what I want to do, a lot of them in opposition with another equally valid idea. So, who knows what will actually turn out, just like life.

I have a smattering amount of knowledge about SEO and how to best setup a website to please the Google gods and the Bing benefactors. How to pick your page names to match the terms interweb loafers such as yourself use to find valuable content with just a click of a button. Sadly, this is not one of those websites. This site will most likely jump from topic to topic, with time between posts measured in both hours as well as months. As the webmaster, this concerns me very little. Mostly because my anticipated reader base is roughly equal to the expected number of contributors to this site. See chart below.

However, even if you are not mentioned in the above chart, you are still welcome. Hopefully you will get some value from your time spent here. But if my time spent on other sites such as catfacts.com and reddit.com are any indication, I doubt it.

Ok, I have sufficiently rambled. Now let’s talk about what I would like to talk about. I have found that working with someone who can keep you on track and committed to my goals is a good thing. I will initially use this blog of that purpose. So, let’s talk about some of those goals.

The first is writing. Writing has been difficult for me most of my life. I fairly certain that there are several retired elementary teachers that would breathe heavy and roll their eyes after showing them an early picture of me. There would be a couple of reasons of this. One, because nearly photo day in school for me was a ‘bad hair day.’ Several clumps of bright blond hair jutting out at several uncomplimentary angles. This toe head helmet of hair framing a set of fingerprint covered glasses and a dirty face. But this paragraph is not about my lack of fashion sense. It is about my lack of doing schoolwork.

In school, I would do the very minimum that I needed to do to get my homework done. Part of me thinks this was because I was a ham-fisted, heavy pressure left handed writer. I would push deeply into the pad of paper and gouge the number 2 pencil into the parchment. This would mean that my hand would hurt very quickly into the writing assignment. On some level, this taught me that writing was painful. This project is an attempt to unlearn this lesson. I have some video courses on effective writing and I plan to watch them and incorporate what I learn on this site. Hopefully, in time you will notice the improvement.

The second is health and fitness. The last six months have been difficult for me. There were times when I felt like a man in my eighties. I only had the energy to watch other people live their lives. This situation gave me a lot to think about and a lot of time to think about it. Sadly I realized that there is a very good chance that I would feel like this again. That one day in the future I will only have the energy to watch others live their lives. I promised myself that if I get another chance, I would make the most of it. So I made myself a promise. I promised myself that I would fight that day as hard as I can for as long as I can. I would get my strength back and more and use it to be as young as I can for as long as I can. There will be posts that will talk about that journey.

The next is scuba diving. I live in the Pacific Northwest and I enjoy scuba diving. Because of my health, I was unable to dive for some time. My health has improved and I have been in the water a couple of times and I want to do a lot more of it. There are a lot of dive sites that I haven’t been to and I will focus on changing that.

Very closely related to scuba is photography. It is related because I enjoy taking pictures underwater. So another topic of conversation here will be photography both above and below the water. I will talk about photo shoots, gear, and technique.

There are others, but I feel that is a good start. I have a rough plan for everything mentioned above, and I will slow flesh things out as time goes on. So I better quit writing about what I’m going to do and start doing what I plan to write about. Until next time…
